How long should cucumber water sit before drinking?
It tastes good after 15 to 30 minutes in the fridge, and even better at 1 to 2 hours. For a stronger infusion, go up to 6 hours. After that, cucumber (and lemon peel) can start tasting dull or slightly bitter depending on the variety and how thin you sliced it. If you want to make it ahead, strain and keep just the infused water chilled.
Do I need to peel the cucumber?
Nope. If your cucumber skin is thin and in good shape, leave it on for the freshest flavor. If you are using a standard garden cucumber (often waxed) or the skin tastes bitter, peel it (or peel in stripes for a middle ground).
Why does my cucumber water taste bitter?
Usually it is one of these: over-steeping, very thin slices sitting too long, a cucumber with naturally bitter skin, lemon slices sitting too long (the peel can read bitter to some people), or herbs (especially mint) that got bruised aggressively. Use fresher cucumber, slice a bit thicker, gently tear or lightly slap the mint instead of muddling it, and strain after a few hours.
Can I use sparkling water?
Yes. Infuse the cucumber in still water first (so it extracts flavor easily), then top glasses with sparkling water right before serving to keep it fizzy.
Is cucumber water safe to leave out at a party?
Keep it cold. For food safety, do not leave it out longer than 2 hours at room temp (or 1 hour if it is hot out). Nest the pitcher in a bowl of ice if it will be sitting on the table.
Can I make just one glass?
Yes. For 2 cups water, use 6 to 10 cucumber rounds, 1 to 2 lemon slices (optional), and 1 to 2 mint leaves (optional). Chill 15 to 30 minutes, then drink. For a pitcher, just scale up using the same vibe and ratios.
