Elephant toothpaste is the kind of kitchen science that feels like a magic trick you can eat with your eyes. You pour a few everyday ingredients into a bottle, blink once, and suddenly you have a ridiculous column of foam climbing out like it has somewhere important to be.

This is not edible, but it is very doable. My favorite version uses yeast as the catalyst, which means you get a big, satisfying reaction without needing scary-strong chemicals. It is the weeknight-friendly, low-drama approach I wish every home experiment came with.

Set it up in a tray or tub, let the kids be the “official pourer,” and keep an old towel nearby (peroxide can bleach). Controlled chaos. The best kind.

Why It Works

  • Big foam fast: Yeast (catalase) speeds the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, and dish soap traps that oxygen into thick foam.
  • More forgiving than the lab version: Using standard 3% hydrogen peroxide keeps it accessible and easier to manage.
  • Great for groups: Easy to repeat in multiple bottles so everyone gets a turn.
  • Simple cleanup: The foam is mostly diluted soapy water, plus yeast and a little leftover peroxide. Rinse tools and surfaces with plenty of water and wash hands after.

Storage Tips

There is not much to “store,” but you can absolutely manage the aftermath like a pro:

  • Foam: Scoop into the sink and rinse with plenty of warm water. It will collapse on its own in a few minutes. Keep it away from eyes and mouth.
  • Leftover activated yeast mixture: Best used right away. If it sits, it slows down and gets less exciting.
  • Hydrogen peroxide: Cap tightly and store in a cool, dark spot. Light makes it lose strength over time.
  • Dish soap and food coloring: Back to the cabinet, no special handling.

Tip: Peroxide can discolor fabric. Use old towels, wear old clothes, and choose a tray, tub, sink, or outdoor spot for easy containment.

Common Questions

Is elephant toothpaste dangerous?

The yeast version with 3% hydrogen peroxide is a lower-risk option, but it still needs real precautions. 3% hydrogen peroxide can irritate skin and eyes and can discolor fabrics. Wear goggles, keep it away from eyes and mouth, do not ingest it, and supervise kids closely. Keep pets back too.

Does elephant toothpaste get hot?

It can feel slightly warm. The reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. With 3% peroxide it is typically mild, but the temperature can vary based on amounts, bottle shape, and room temperature.

Can I use higher percentage hydrogen peroxide?

You can, but I do not recommend it for a home kitchen setup. Higher concentrations can cause burns and require serious protective gear. Stick to 3% for family-friendly fun.

Why did my foam flop?

  • Your water was too hot and weakened the yeast. Aim for warm, not steaming.
  • Your hydrogen peroxide is old or stored in light. Fresher peroxide foams better.
  • Not enough dish soap. Soap is what makes it look like toothpaste instead of fizz.
  • Your yeast needed a moment. Let it sit 30 to 60 seconds after mixing with warm water, until it looks a little foamy.

What bottle works best?

A clean, dry plastic soda bottle (16 to 20 ounces) is perfect. Avoid glass. A narrower opening can help the foam rise taller, but it can also overflow faster, so pair it with a deeper tray or tub.
