Can I make these in a slow cooker only?
You can, but I recommend baking first for better texture and less grease in the sauce. If you want slow-cooker only, use fully cooked frozen meatballs or brown the meatballs in a skillet first. Then cook on LOW 3 to 4 hours in the sauce. I do not recommend cooking raw meatballs from scratch in the slow cooker because it can cook unevenly and the texture can get a little soft.
What is the best meat for appetizer meatballs?
A mix of beef and pork is the sweet spot: beef brings flavor, pork adds juiciness. If you only have ground beef, choose 80 to 85% lean so they do not dry out.
How do I keep meatballs warm for a party?
Transfer the baked meatballs into the sauce, then hold in a slow cooker on WARM (or LOW). Stir once in a while so the sauce stays glossy, and add a splash of water if it thickens too much.
Why did my meatballs turn tough?
Usually it is from overmixing the meat or packing the balls too tightly. Mix just until combined, and roll gently. Also, do not overbake. Pull them when they hit at least 160°F (or 165°F if you like an extra safety buffer).
Can I make them gluten-free?
Yes. Swap the breadcrumbs for gluten-free breadcrumbs (or crushed gluten-free crackers) and confirm your BBQ sauce and Worcestershire are gluten-free.
