Old-school holiday filling with apples, dried fruit, citrus, warm spices, and a little brandy for that bakery-level flavor.

Mincemeat has a reputation problem. It sounds like it should involve a suspicious amount of meat, and it shows up around the holidays like that one relative who insists they are “misunderstood.” But here is the truth: modern mincemeat is mostly fruit, warm spices, citrus, and something boozy that makes your kitchen smell like a candle in the best way.

This is my go-to homemade mincemeat for pies, tarts, cookie fillings, and the extremely underrated move of spooning it over vanilla ice cream. It is bright from orange and lemon, cozy from cinnamon and clove, and just sticky enough to cling to pastry like it belongs there.

Why It Works

  • Big flavor, not fussy. You get deep, jammy fruit flavor with one pot and straightforward steps.
  • Balanced sweetness. Apples and citrus keep it lively so it tastes bright, not flat.
  • Better texture. A mix of chopped fruit and dried fruit creates that classic mince pie bite without turning into baby food.
  • Make-ahead friendly. Mincemeat actually gets better after a day or two in the fridge as the flavors mingle.

Storage Tips

How to Store Mincemeat

  • Refrigerator: Cool completely, then store in a clean jar or airtight container for up to 7 to 10 days. If anything smells “off,” looks moldy, or starts to fizz, toss it and make a fresh batch.
  • Freezer: Freeze in freezer-safe containers or zip-top bags (pressed flat) for up to 6 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
  • Jar tip: If you store it in a jar, leave a little headspace and always use a clean spoon to keep it fresh.
  • How to use from cold: Stir well. If it feels too stiff, microwave a small portion for 10 to 20 seconds to loosen it up.

Common Questions

Common Questions

Does mincemeat contain meat?

Traditionally, mincemeat did include minced meat and suet. These days, many modern versions are fruit-forward and meat-free, but some traditional and heritage recipes still use suet. This recipe is meatless and uses butter for richness.

What is suet, and do I need it?

Suet is the hard fat from around beef or mutton kidneys, used in very traditional mincemeat for richness and texture. You do not need it here. Butter gives you that round, rich finish without a special ingredient hunt.

What can I use instead of brandy?

Dark rum is great. Bourbon is also delicious. For alcohol-free, use apple juice or strong black tea, plus 1 teaspoon vanilla. The flavor will be different but still very good.

Can I can this for shelf-stable storage?

I do not recommend water-bath canning unless you follow a tested, approved canning recipe designed for safe shelf stability. This version is meant for the fridge or freezer.

Why does my mincemeat look watery?

Apples release juice. Just simmer it a bit longer with the lid off until it looks glossy and thick, like loose jam. It will also thicken more as it cools.

What do I put mincemeat in besides pies?

Try it in tart shells, thumbprint cookies, hand pies, oatmeal bars, baked brie, or swirled into cheesecake before baking.

The first time I made mincemeat, I expected something weird and old-fashioned in a bad way. Instead, it tasted like the inside of a really good fruit pie decided to put on a sweater and read a book by the fireplace. Now it is my yearly tradition when I want my kitchen to smell like I have my life together, even if I am absolutely just winging it with flour on my hoodie.
